What is IELTS and why is it important?

IELTS (the International English Language Testing System) is the world’s most popular English language proficiency test for higher education, professional registration and global migration. It is accepted by thousands of universities, employers, professional bodies and immigration authorities across the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, the USA and many more countries. A strong IELTS band score opens the door to studying at top universities, securing skilled employment and obtaining permanent residency or a work visa abroad.

IELTS is available in two versions: Academic — for those applying to universities and professional institutions — and General Training — for those migrating for work or undertaking non-academic training. Both versions assess your real-world ability to listen, read, write and speak in English.

Structure of the IELTS exam

The IELTS test assesses four key language skills. Your performance in each is reported on a band scale from 1 to 9, and an overall band score is calculated from the four sections:

  • Listening (approx. 30 minutes, 40 questions): Four recordings of native English speakers, ranging from everyday conversations to academic discussions, with questions that test your understanding of main ideas, detail and opinion.
  • Reading (60 minutes, 40 questions): Three long passages with a variety of question types. The Academic test uses texts from books, journals and newspapers, while General Training uses workplace and everyday materials.
  • Writing (60 minutes, 2 tasks): Task 1 requires describing a graph, chart or diagram (Academic) or writing a letter (General Training); Task 2 is an essay responding to a point of view, argument or problem. Both demand clear structure, accurate grammar and appropriate vocabulary.
  • Speaking (11–14 minutes): A face-to-face interview with an examiner in three parts — introduction, an individual long-turn on a given topic, and a two-way discussion. It assesses fluency, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation.
